T had me do this after I was stuck in flashback mode and was obsessed with one particular issue. After I was done talking about it, she asked "How can we change the outcome? What would you do about it now if you could."
I rescued the little girl, then I kicked the crap out of the guy. It's not an absolute fix, but it is the beginning.
If I had to answer your post in one word I would say "TIME."
This is very true for me also.
I use this for nightmares too, before I fully wake up I go back into the nightmare and change the story to one where I gain control of the situation and take my power back.
Time has also helped me immensely.
