I agree with that. All of these meds are just one big experiment. If the Ritalin helps you, then great. If not, you can try something else, whether another med, behavioral modification, or whatever. I don't think it's that crucial to have an official diagnosis from a psychologist, although there are probably people here who will disagree with me. If you report ADHD-like symptoms to your pdoc, who is aware of any other psychological issues you have and meds you are taking, and he thinks it might be helpful to try a med for those symptoms, then there is no harm in trying. You are not going to get addicted to Ritalin in just a few days. As long as your pdoc knows your other meds and medical conditions (e.g. high blood pressure), he/she can make sure there are no contraindications. I think what is very important is to keep in close contact with your pdoc about how the Ritalin is working for you. Is it helping with your symptoms, is it making you sleepless, jittery, etc. Try to see the pdoc again 2 weeks or less after starting the Ritalin (this is wise when starting any new med). Maybe you will need to discontinue or have the dosage adjusted.
I hope the Ritalin is helpful for you. I am taking Vyvanse for ADHD-like symptoms and find it very helpful.
