Yeah. But medicare (a benefit of citizenship) is fairly extensive. In the USA you are kinda expected to have health insurance. Some people get it through their employer or by being married to someone who gets family coverage.

I tried to find a health insurance plan that would cover mental health and a reasonable plan (with not much of a copay) was around... $370 per month. Out of my price range - but worth it if you are paying $10,000 for therapy and the therapist takes that variety of insurance, indeed... Great coverage on everything else, too (optometry, dental etc).

The only plan that was realistic for me (and I would have gone up to $2,000) were plans that ranged between $400 and $900 and excluded all psychiatry, neurology, addiction etc. So... Wasn't feasible for me to get coverage for that.

Turns out that I qualify for 'charity care' here as I earn less than the poverty line (graduate student). So... $10 per session to see a p-doc in training (typically $180). Assuming that comes through (fingers crossed).
