prue, the symptoms vary.
at the main web page of pc there's a link you can click on to learn more.
but here are some examples of mania: as for manic episodes, it's when you feel exceptionally good, too good if you get my meaning. some bipolars in a manic episode will go on major shopping sprees when they really don't need to buy anything. others will feel such an abundance of energy it's hard to sleep. a girlfirend of mine made an entirely hand sewn quilt in one night because she was manic. it's like you have an enhanced sense of well-being...over the top. often times decisions that are not sound are made while manic. those are a few examples.
the length of a manic episode can vary. the mania has a mind of it's own.
when does the mania start? for a bipolar not on medication it can be at any time. you can go to bed one night ok and the next morning be manic.
there is also a state of psychosis mania for some bipolars. this is when they have delusions of grandeur or do things that have no meaning but they do them anyway...like rent a lear jet for a trip.

other people with bipolar may not have much mania but tend to have more down mood swings-like i have. rarely have i had any real mania of any consequence because my depressive side of bipolar is so low that my mania is more like norms or an agitated state of mind.
so i hope this helps....i use myself as an example of a person who tends not to go over the top but some people do while in a manic state.
