Back in the 90s when my large system was in turmoil and acting out we had that problem. Phones would get messed up, even computers. My T at the time did some research and discovered it wasn't uncommon. A fellow DIDer had it much worse than me. It became a running joke.
Now that there are only four alters left plus myself it doesn't seem to happen. So what your friend told you could be very true.
