Hi Kathryn,
Thanks for posting this link, it is certainly interesting.
I have to say though, that I don't fully agree with what they're saying. To be fair, I do believe that we as a society are becoming a little too technologically dependent, and too much computer time can certainly hinder actual, social relations. That being said however, I personally use facebook as a *tool* of communication whereby my friends and I are able to plan events, converse about school related projects, etc that are going to be implemented IRL. In other words, we use facebook as a means to which we communicate in order to meet in person.
Also, I don't see how facebook is any different from email? Or even to those reading this message right now. Its just another form of communication that is extended by posting pictures, or various other applications.
Also, while i can see how one might get trapped being online too much in lieu of going out, I think it actually helps to keep me IN contact with people. There are days where I'm busy with school or work, and I don't have a chance to call my friends to catch up. Facebook (and other email types) allow for this exchange without a huge time commitment - something that while is slightly less personal, allows for maintenance of relationships that may otherwise be lost.
Just my two cents...
Jacq
