I have been hospitalized for major depression 3 times now (twice as an adult, once as a teen) though, if that makes a difference. Even still, up until the last time I spoke with my last psychologist, he's recommended that if I ever seriously feel like ending it, go to the ER (rather than call or e-mail him). My psychiatrist is tougher to get a hold of that the psychologist though, and I always talk with the nurse first. I called before my last hospitalization, hoping to speak with the psychiatrist, but she tried to talk me down. I went to the ER that afternoon.

2.) No- I was offered that option at my second hospitalization & I basically flipped out on the doctors. It seemed cruel to me - I have epilepsy. Why would I want to purposely have seizures?? That was my rationalization.

3.) I don't know

4.) I highly doubt it. They do set up treatment plans on an outpatient basis, I know. But I highly doubt that most hospitals have a plan set aside to provide emergency ECT. First, a physician goes over your general health and whether or not ECT is a decent option for you. Then, a neurologist (or epileptologist) becomes involved to do the procedure.

I hope that helps. Sorry that you've had a rough week

I'm sorry about what you've been going through as well! I'm hoping to hear sometime today or tomorrow about that referral. Re. emergency ECT - after I posted that message I went online and did some research. NY state doesn't allow emergency ECT. That surprised me because I thought that I read somewhere that it does happen in some cases.

If my insurance company fails to follow through on this referral then I will probably have to sign in to the ER at some point. I'm not that bad yet. I just need to get through today with that test and if I get home early enough I'll call the social worker when I get home (the one who's working on the referra)l.

Thanks!
