My middle son had this same problem starting around 9 months of age. For him, it turned out to be food allergies. He is sensitive to dairy and gluten, and once we removed those from his diet, the poop issues resolved themselves. We also used probiotics, like sannah, to help get his gut healthy again...

In the meantime,while we were figuring all of this out, we saw a pediatric GI specialist, who put him on miralax. It was really necessary for a while, because he had a big fear of pooping and would hold it and it would make the situation worse. The miralax broke the cycle, and then taking him off of dairy and gluten really resolved it once and for all.
