There is a national advocacy group (I'd have to search to find it) that helps to locate pro-bono lawyers for people in special situations - I found them when I was being evicted just over a year ago.

Also, some counties have special section 8 type programs for people with mental illness. I don't know that it helps for every situatio or if you could even use help with lower rent, but if so that's something to consider.

No matter what, be sure to document what is occuring. If you have offered to pay the rent by a specific date be sure to put it in writing and submit it to your landlord and keep a copy for yourself. The one thing that benefits you most is to demonstrate that you are not witholding the rent but only delayed. If you typically pay your rent on time it can't hurt to make a note it.

I will try to find that link in case you need it. It's not at all like legal aid - I was hooked up with a top notch lawyer from an internationally known law firm.
