Yes, TMJ can be hereditary, but more often than not TMJ is caused by arthritis or poor tooth contact and/ or teeth grinding while you sleep.

#1 symptom of TMJ (besides jaw pain) is popping of the joints in the jaw.
I would check with your dentist to see what might be going on.
