There are two basic questions here you want to look at :-
1. Why is it so painful for you to be alone (or to be separated with your family)?
2. What can you do about it?
(Question 1) The reason that you are suffering from it so much could mean some deeply embedded childhood traumas which you have not resolve. There are many methods to get in touch with embedded pain, one is to journal, the other is to use the inner child technique. And there are lot more ways like counselling, therapy, etc. You could learn about all of these by googling it.
(Question 2) At the meantime you could fill your time up with meaningful activities like volunteering to help the less fortunate (perhaps in the area pertaining to helping children). Or get yourself into any activities that will take your mind off and make you happy. Personally I recommend activities that would enhance spiritual growth, for it is closely tie with emotional health.
There are many things you could do in life although sometimes it is hard to know what to do when you are deeply embedded in the painful process. That is why I enjoy being here in a community like this one - we could help each other and remind each other to get up when we fall and keep going.
It might take a while to uncover the deep seated issue inside us but getting to know oneself deeply is a journey that is worth a million. I believe we are all here to learn the deeper lesson of life. To help to love each other (which is what makes life so wonderful).
