I think the difference was that people would speak of them to their priest or their family or their friends and get support for their difficulties that way. Not they are cast as 'medical disorders' where the strategy is to 'seek medical attention' and 'take what your doctor prescribes'.
A child dies every 30 seconds from maleria yet more money is spent on treating 'sexual dysfunction' (instead of considering people's perhaps unrealistic expectations and the role of porn etc in promoting them). How come? People will pay more for the medicalization of distress than they will for maleria treatments. Not at all to undermine anyones distress at all but one child every 30 seconds...
