And I'm not sure it stats help to "prove" anything, but they can be used to support (or manipulate) anything.

Yes, stats can be used as a manipulation tool, but thats another reason to understand them...making sure you know how the data samples are collected & such...
without understanding stats, you can't really undrstand when they are being manipulated either
