Usually they have a really sweet and docile temperament.
But I once briefy adopted a beautiful St. Bernard who was vicious. It was such a shame, because he was so gorgeous. But he ended up having to be put down, too. For a while, Saints were really popular, and there was a lot of inbreeding going on. Apparently that ended up producing some Saints with wierd personalities. Luckily, they aren't as popular anymore, so it's more likely they won't be flawed.
I've heard that this inbreeding thing often happens when a particular breed gets popular. When 101 Dalmations came out both times, cartoon and real life, Dalmations got real popular and there was lots of inbreeding, I've heard. Probably, with Marley and Me, there will be a lot of white Labs getting popular, too.
With a giant breed dog, it's extremely important that they be friendly and good with people, because if not, they can do a lot of damage! It's especially important if there are children around, of course.
