So I asked a woman in my home group to be my new sponsor today. We're about the same age, but she has 10 years sobriety, but really struggled with sobriety at first and had a lot of the same issues around the higher power concept that I'm struggling with. She also fully supports me being in rehab, and has no objection to the fact that I'm on meds.

She seems to have a really good program, and is clearly happy in her sobriety.

I think she'll be a better fit than my old sponsor who objected to meds, didn't want me in rehab and didn't get my relapsing.

I'm feeling pretty good about this - now I just have to find a way to tell my old sponsor that I have to move on.

How about "Thank you for helping me, but I have found someone I think is a better fit" ?

sounds good to me, splitimage. you continue to fight for freedom from alcohol. your new sponsor who understands your struggle could make a good match. thanks for letting us know.

Good for you!! I'm so glad you got another one! Obviously the other one was not the sponsor for you!

Just tell the old one "Thanks for your help, but since we don't agree on a couple of issues, I've asked "so and so" to be my sponsor." She shouldn't mind that, if she's got any kind of program at all.

Please keep us updated on your progress! I for one would surely like to know! God bless and remember - just one day (or minute) at a time! Hugs, Lee

(((((((((((splitimage)))))))))))))

When I relapsed and found a new sponsor, I told my old one (truthfully), I feel like I need to do EVERYTHING differently this time, because I really want to stay sober.

And I did do everything differently - new sponsor, different approach to the steps, stopped knitting at meetings, more meetings each week, etc.

My new sponsor has SO been the right one for me. I'm glad I switched, even though it was a little scary and uncomfortable.
