I agree it's a terrible problem. In Canada I don't think we have pain clinics. We have common clinics but they're not allowed to give scripts for narcotics. People have to get narcotics from their family docs or treating physician. Even still, some people manage to convice more leniant doctors for the strong ones like oxycodone.

I heard it's one of the most addictive pain pills out there. My brother, the one who killed himself, fell on the job and injured his back. This is the brother who was also an alcoholic. He stopped drinking for a while and I think he just replaced one addiction for the other - becoming hooked on oxycodone. Many times people will go to several clinics and scripts - to deal them on the street. This drug should only be given under very strict conditions for a short period of time to chronic pain patients.......not to anyone claiming they hurt their back.

Not everyone gets addicted. I think they should have a central database, at least for drugstores/legitimate pharmacies in a wide area so they can catch multiple scripts of regulated meds.

Sometimes things get ridiculous, like when my husband went to get an eye dropper for me to put medicine in my ear and the pharmacist asked him, before he would sell it to him (it was behind the counter) why he was buying it; like a drug addict would tell him the truth? My 60-something year old husband was caught totally unaware and stammered, "Because my wife told me to"

some states have tabs on large quantities being dispensed. i don't think florida has done this yet. go figure. documentary on florida...ppl come from states far away to get the stash. then return home to peddle what they don't want for their own habit at a higher price than they paid.

perna, would have loved to see the pharmasist's face when your hubby said "cause my wife..."

Yes I agree not everyone gets addicted. If a person has intense pain - they won't really get the high punch but instead just relief from the pain only. The same goes for cancer patints on heavy morphine - they just get some pain relief and not the intense high the average person would get. But when a person without pain takes it, they naturally get high.

Here in Canada they stopped selling Sinutab OTC because drug places could crush and use it to make an illegal drug - forget what it's called. Now we have to go to the pharmacist counter and ask for it.

The US has a federal database on who has what prescription. Doctor shopping is illegal. Florida pain clinics have managed to stay legal because they are real doctors with a real license and they give out legal prescriptions. Bad thing is that they give out these prescriptions to anyone that will pay. This is de facto, so it's hard for police to get anyone on it. It's only since wide media attention and documentaries such as the one shown on the show Vanguard that police have started to investigate, especially when those who own the clinic are usually ex-convicts.
