So I haven't posted on here for ages and thought I'd post an update as this forum really helped me in the early days when I still had horrible withdrawal symptoms still going on. It was my year sober birthday last week and felt really good getting the cards and a chip from the aa meetings I go to. The early days were awful and I was so tempted to drink and drug just to get a break from the 25+ years of stuff I never dealt with, the withdrawals and the days problems but somehow managed to keep going to aa meetings and trying to talk about how bad I felt. I shared from the top table also last week my story and it felt like being in a slow motion car crash while I was talking but people were really kind sharing back to me and since then I've been able to look at people more easily when I talk to them. The only advice I didn't listen to was the one about having a relationship in early recovery, I heard you're supposed to get plants for a year then a pet dog for a year then think about having a relationship, well I got a plant and girlfriend straight away we've just split, she goes to my home group and the whole thing has made me feel emotions I don't like feeling. I'm keeping close to aa meetings and my sponsor as I've come so far now and I know drinking and drugging to deal with it would really be insane (I've been to institutions there's only jails and death left) An aa friend of mine has moved out to Atlanta (I'm in UK) and has invited me over to have a look round and go to some aa/na meetings and am thinking it would be a good time to get away for a while.
The voluntary job I got almost a year ago is going well they have given me keys, the safe codes and keep sending me on courses and am amazed about the trust I have coming back. I had got so bad before this was unable to work since 1999, am also starting a counseling course in September as I would love a career in substance abuse and mental health. My daughter has got in touch also after 7 years, we are texting each other and getting to know each other slowly. That's me pretty much up to date, still struggling with a lot of life stuff but am seeing enough real improvements to keep me going Thank you so much for helping me in the early days as I was too frightened to talk to anyone face to face. I wouldn't have made it this far without you

UKfox,

Congratulations on making a year. You should feel proud. And it sounds like your life is turning around in other ways too. I'd advise you to keep going to lots of meetings and talking to your sponsor regularly, as I know I kind of slacked off after a year and wound up relapsing after 14 months. Been struggling with on and off again sobriety (currently on) ever since.

Thanks for sharing.

UK, so good to hear from you at last. thank you so much! your thread sure made my day. wow such an uplifting story thus far in your recovery. congratulations. you're doing the footwork and it shows. plus having a sponsor for guidance, going to meetings and sharing too.
i hope others struggling here will read your thread. you are certainly carrying the message and giving hope to those who are trying to stay sober here at pc.
the "Promises" really do come true to us. your's have started happening. believe me when i say your life will become more than you can ever imagine. it happened to me and it's still happening 21 years sober.

WONDERFUL!!! Way to go I hope the fact that one can live a good life without alcohol has fully embraced you, and that any desire for it is lessening with each passing day.

ukfox,
CONGRATULATIONS! I'm happy for you; life is so much better without alcohol. I drank alcoholically for 4 years but am now sober for 5 years. I think the thoughts about drinking will always be there but they are much fewer and farther between. KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK!
