I might be involved with a facility for youth detox. Although I have textbook material to help me plan a program, and I generally do lots of research for preparation, I wanted to ask if anyone here had thoughts about what to emphasize? Just as an authentic input about what would be helpful in such a program. Thanx if anyone has input.

Hi Rose ~ is this a 12 step program, such as AA? If so, and IF they gave you a "Big Book" of Alcoholics, my first suggestion is to read the book, especially on "how it works." If you don't have a Big Book, you might try a used book store or even the Library for a copy. This book, as well as regular and frequent AA meetings, saved my life!
There are too many things to emphasize. Taking responsibility, belief in a Higher Power than yourself, etc., are just a couple of things. There are so many more. Since you are seeking help, you obviously realize that you have a problem with addiction. That alone is a big step to take. ![]() |

rose the "disease concept" helped me a lot 21 yrs. ago. i wanted to know the whys and hows even though i was permanently an alcoholic til the day i die, tho i'm in recovery. the disease concept applies to drug addicts too.
the promise of jails, institutions (psych wards, detoxes, long term treatment programs) and death if we forge ahead and not heed the warnings that we have a problem. (most youth won't believe this but if just one hears your message, it may save a life). re youth detox- they are there so they are already a statistic. for drug addicts most die young. 75% of all oxy users will die due to overdose, usually young. ONLY 1% of 100 active alcoholics will recover with abstinence from alcoholism. not a terrific statistic either. a wise and truthful saying, "One drink is too many and a thousand not enough." you may want to suggest they look around the room. then give them the info that the majority of them will lose their health, their life and/or kill someone else while drinking and/or using. a sobering thought. i'd acknowledge that since they are young they may not believe your message. the choice lies squarely on their shoulders. Teen Substance Abuse Is Top U.S. Health Concern, Researchers Say June 29 (Bloomberg) -- Ninety percent of American alcoholics and drug addicts began their habits before age 18, making adolescent substance abuse the biggest U.S. public health problem, researchers say. Thanks for your messages. Actually, to avoid any confusion, I am not someone with addiction (I am not seeking help). I am working on preparing a program that is intended to help young people with addictions.
So, in addition to my own research and preparation, I was asking for input, about aspects of programs that people have found to be useful/relevant/successful. |
