Hey all,
So, while AA is helping, I feel that it would be more helpful without the cop-out of having to give your faith over to a higher power. We alcoholics need to be responsible for our own actions, without the whole "everything happens for a reason bit" Where can I find secular help? Thanks |

as it was explained to me-tho some may disagree-some of us don't believe believe in a higher being but otherwise use the program to help us remain sober. the group members can help us fulfill that step. for the group is more powerful than we are as individuals trying to stay sober.
if i had tried to get sober alone i know my sobriety would have never happened. some people can do it alone tho i know not how. but for me i needed the group for support. hope this may help you.

@Brontoset~ I contribute my sobriety to my close relationship to my Higher Power..Who I choose to call Jesus. For me its not a "cop out" I take full accountability/responsibility for my actions...What caught my eye about ur post was that u said some believe that "everything happens for a reason"..I dont believe that...

Brontoset,
If you're looking for secular alternatives to AA, you might want to try SOS, Secular Organization for Sobriety, or Rational Recovery. Try googling them. They don't have as many face to face meetings as AA, but I'm pretty sure Rational Recovery has a pretty good support board. splitimage |

I avoid AA meetings for the same reason. I wouldnt mind going there, and I dont mind other people's beliefs, but I will not engage in a group chant of 'serenity prayer' while handholding in a large circle.
I also will never follow the religious based 12 steps. I also do not believe that addiction is a disease. It is a consequence of environmental circumstances, and a coping mechanism for pain that exceeds one's own resources. As far as meetings for recovering addicts that are based in logic... I know of zero. If you find out, please let us know! ![]() Good luck in your healing. |
