Hi, I really dont like even writing about this. I am sober a year this March. On several med. And my weight has gone up alot. Anybody else experience this. Things are so much better then there were in other aspects. I have more energy, not worried about dwi s any more. Not worried about my liver. Ive had blood work and nothings wrong with me great. Any way thought I would lose weight when I stopped, I was taking in a lot of calories with alcohol. But havent.

regarding the weight issue you're struggling with… i know that must feel like it's a big issue for you, it's a problem for a lot of people in recovery. i steadily gained weight for a while and eventually stopped gaining. i haven't managed to lose much yet, and that's okay without intending in any way, whatsoever, to minimise your feelings about it, you know what? it's really not a big issue (no pun intended) many of us gain weight coming into recovery, some more than others. and we can lose it again. maybe not all, or maybe we end up looking better than ever. that's really not the most important issue at hand please don't allow this issue to cloud your judgement about what's really important in your life. it's way more important to remain clean & sober than to lose weight. for now, anyway. 1 year is a wonderful milestone, but it's still early days. it's not a race or a competition, just one day at a time. recovery will bless you in ways beyond your wildest dreams __________________ “ Those who have a 'why' to live, can bear with almost any 'how.' ” ~V. layla achieving the benchmark of one year sober is something that most ppl don't do. i hope you'll have many many more years to celebrate. sobriety is a gift. one we do have to work for but as you stated the rewards are MANY.
i know others who've gained weight in early sobriety...no more EMPTY calories. you can taper off and stabalize your weight...avoid sweets if you can. the absence of alcohol in our diet causes us to crave carbs and sweets. to counter balance this fresh fruits will help. __________________ Do not let your fire go out, spark by irreplaceable spark, in the hopeless swamps of the approximate, the not-quite, the not-yet, the not-at-all. Congratulations on your year, That is a great accomplishment. I have experienced a lot of weight gain myself. After I quit drinking I did what everyone told me not to. I got hooked on york peppermint patties.HA! Now I am paying for it! I have stopped the sweets and have started on the fruit and yogurt diet. I am hoping more exercise and better diet will do the trick. Believe me you are not alone!

YAY!!!!! 1 YEAR IS HUGE! As for the weight gain, as other's have said, sobriety is well worth the weight you might gain. You might try keeping a food diary and write down your emotions when you eat. I, as with many others, tend to do more emotional eating when we are sober and not using drugs or alcohol to cover our feelings.

Hi Layla, congratulations, that is wonderful!
Yeh, when I first got sober I ate a lot of sugar. (alcohol is made of sugar so my body still wanted it). I gained a bit of weight, but it was a trade off for me. I have to put my sobriety first. The sugar craving left around 14 months of sobriety or so for me. Other people I've met have also experienced this, but it's no big deal. It was a trade-off for me, I'd rather have a few extra pounds than to go back to that dark, horrible place before sobriety. COngratulations on 1 year, this is phenomenal! As Madisgram mentioned, unfortunately many people do not accomplish this. One day at a time. be gentle with yourself. Grats again! |
