Yes, to a certain degree. There's the usual explanation of how pain releases endorphins which can make you feel better. SI is also a coping mechanism, and you start to need every time things begin to be overwhelming. I guess you could say that it is a behavioral addiction, and not an addiction to a substance like drugs or alcohol would be.
