Days of Healing Days of Joy ......................................Oct 5th

Ask, and ye shall receive, that your joy may be full.........John 16:24

Some profound thoughts, gems of wisdom that have endured for centuries, can make us angry and resentful. Depending on our experience, one idea can evoke a wide range of emotional responses. The quote above, for example, might make a lot of people laugh, shudder, or scoff. Perhaps their life experience taught them not to ask because whenever they did, they found rejection. So they learned not to ask.

But recovery is learning new truths. What recovering adult children learn is that who you ask is what makes the difference. We learn to stop taking our requests to untrustworthy people. When we do that, we discover that we will receive when we ask only those we can count on to be there for us.

Interest, support, and positive reinforcement are available to all of us in the program. All we need to do is ask the right people.

I will not make a virtue of giving trust to everyone. Trust must be earned. I will be discerning in who I trust and in who I don't trust.

Trust --- That's a big word. I have always been one to trust too quickly. And unfortunately, even after having been hurt by those I trusted, I didn't learn the first time. There were those who I was SURE wouldn't hurt or "take" or scam me, and my confidence in them was soon broken into little pieces, as well as my heart. Soon I let the pendulum swing entirely the other way, and I didn't trust anyone.

Like the reading says trust must be earned and I finally learned that. Our goal is to discern who is trustworthy and who isn't. But I have to learn to trust MYSELF as I grow in the program in emotional stability. As I learn to trust ME, I can better able determine when and when not to place my trust in others.
