Hi. Thought it might be helpful to start a thread on what some people have found as an alternative high/escape/addiction in their sobriety that is positive. 😊

I returned to my first best friend and escape - books. I have read a ton of memoirs by authors who are recovering alcoholics or addicts. I'm not in 12 step now but the AA book Living Sober was great for early sobriety. I get newsletters from Lifering.org and a great online paper called The Fix. There is also a forum strictly for addiction called Sober Recovery.

I write and I knit. Both help me get out of my head - writing because it lets me get my feelings out, and I'm good at it, and have a lot of fun doing it. Knitting I have to totally concentrate on, and I love the feel of the yarn, in my fingers. When I'm knitting, I'm not thinking about anything else, so it lets me escape in the way that drinking used to, and I get something beautiful at the end of it.

I create projects, take classes. If I have a particular problem I dive right in and "study" it. The constant focus/awareness helps me refrain more often and educates me at the same time.

Photography has always been my big one but I am hot and cold with it. My whole life self learning and intellectual pursuits have brought me much satisfaction. I am hot and cold with that too. My addict mind tends to be all or nothing. Start a project, get bored and quit. Working when I am doing good I like. When it comes to work I am very thorough and follow through.
