I have a friend who is alcoholic. He's recently told me that he has had convulsions withdraw ing and that he's forgetful (can't remember his co-workers names) and that he has partial lapses where he hears someone talking but can't grasp the meaning of what they are saying. It almost sounds like a foreign language. Have any of you been through this and what can I say to placate him??

He should see a neurologist. Withdrawals from chronic heavy use can have some severe affects. Is he still drinking or withdrawing? If he is in withdrawal that bad it should be in a hospital setting. Some of those symptoms I have not heard of related to alcohol.

My friend is also suffering from the same symptoms, he is a heavy drinker and now he is in withdrawal state. He decided to go to california rehabilitation center for his medication. I wish I can join him, but I'm still saving money for my rehab.

It's possible your friend is starting to show signs of Karsacoff's syndrom, which is irreversable brain damage from severe alcohol abuse. Even if it's not that bad, problems with short term memory, personality changes, and inability to concentrate are all symptoms of heavy alcohol abuse. And if he's at the point of having withdrawal seizures if he doesn't drink, then it's very serious.
The best you can do is encourage him to seek treatment, including a medical detox, and stop drinking, although he probably won't go through with it, until he recognizes alcohol as a problem. Good luck. splitimage |

yes I would say he has to have a very long history of heavy alcohol use for these symptoms to happen. I drank very heavily for 17 years and didn't have any problems withdrawing/ detoxing.
He really needs to stop drinking and detox in a medical environment. They can treat him to get through it and hopefully on the road to sobriety.

I am really sorry to hear that it is not a withdrawal state and that he is starting to show Karsacoff's syndrome. I agree to splitimage and zinco, he really needs treatment.
