I have a relative who is drug addicted and refuses to get help. Soon she will be without a home or income. Her family worries that they will find her dead on the streets, either due to accidental overdose or suicide (though I don't know how real an option this is). Two questions: 1. Can they involuntarily commit her? She appears to be a danger to herself, but maybe not in the technical sense needed for a trip to the ER; 2. Should they even attempt this?

I put in the trigger warning since I'm not sure if someone has experienced this and would have a difficult time thinking about it.

Thanks.

I have never heard of it happening. The only way would be to get her arrested and then maybe the courts would intervene.

They probably can't do anything unless she is a real threat to herself or others. I think zinco is right the police would have to intervene somehow and then it still might not happen. I hope she comes to her senses and gets some help. It is so hard to sit back and watch and not be able to do anything. I will keep you both in my prayers and will hope for the best. Let us know.

Usually for a first time offence if it was referred to drug court there would be treatment requirements and probation but not inpatient. maybe drug testing.
