My mother has been on oxycodone for over a year for spinal stenosis (3 - 10/325 pills a day and sometimes 4). She had surgery to correct it on the 15th. We tried to slowly wean her from the oxys then to norcos (7.5/325) and now she is off it all. Withdrawls were still rough but I think we are at the tail end. She is still getting chills occasionally and still has diarrhea which has gone on for about a week or two. How much longer will these symptoms last?

Also she now on tramadol for the pain. I know it is a synthetic opiate. will it help her withdrawls, prolong them or neither?

Withdrawal is complicated and depends on a wide range of factors, including how much she was taking, how long she was using, how she has been weaned off and her own body / metabolism. Unfortunately it is almost impossible to give a time-frame, which I know can make it a lot harder. Most symptoms usually resolve within 2-3 weeks but it can be longer for some people. Is she working with a doctor around it? They can probably give advice and help with symptom management if necessary, especially around the diarrhea if it is a big problem for her.

I'm not sure about tramadol sorry. Have heard of it but no experience with people who are using it especially when going through withdrawal.

Thanks, we weaned her off based on her docs recommendations. she need to call him about another issue and I will have her ask about the lingering effects

I think it should be about the same as heroin (length of withdrawal) which is about a week...

Synthetic opiates prevent withdrawal symptoms in the short term. However, once decreasing or ending the synthetic opiate she will go through withdrawal from that, which is often longer than the original drug! However, done with the care of a doctor, can be safe...

It just depends on the half-life... I have been on heroin and prescribed two different synthetic opiates...
