I have abused alcohol for about 10 years and have been sober for around 10 months I'm wondering if I can prove to social security that my drinking is a mental illness. I'm trying to claim temporary disability and substance abuse is one of many mental illnesses I am dealing with.

I think they did away w substance related disability claims in the 90s. I'm not sure though.

I am not sure, but I know my drinking let me to a path straight into being bipolar. I think it is related for sure although it hasn't been proven.

Getting social security is tough without hospital documentation of an actual disability. You may want to look into it.

Good luck!
