I've always figured I've been "self-medicating" with drugs and alcohol. Well, today I finally realized that they don't work. At all. And with most everything I've abused in the past 6 years, it's actually made my mental health worse, and has made it harder for my treatment team to help me out because they have no clue what's the effects of the substances, what's withdrawals, and what are genuine symptoms. It doesn't help that I constantly lie to them about it either just to avoid a lecture. I've been paying for this treatment, but am not honest, so how is that helping me?
I've finally realized that for myself.

I am proud of you too! I am an alcoholic in recovery and I know it was self medicating but it was wrecking my life. I had to hit bottom to change.

Very good. Now you need to just stay in this mindset and you likely won't drink again. Great job . Reading your post every day would help keep yourself focused on sobriety.
