So now I am officially starting to taper off Xanax. Long story. But I've been on it everyday for 5 years (I know it's not recommended long term, but they have allowed me to stay on it due to panic disorder/agoraphobia) so now it's time to taper. Basically because I want to have a baby with my husband but there's more.

I've gone down .25mg and have been on 1.75mg for four days. I'm scared but I've got to do this. And yes I am doing this with a doctor.

I guess I'm just looking for any advice or encouragement from people who can relate. I at first went down to 1.5 but that was too big of a jump and I had withdrawal so I'm going to stay at 1.75 for a week. Looking forward to my cognitive abilities hopefully returning. For example, I always go for the wrong cupboard when I mean to go for the coffee cup cupboard. Just a little thing I've noticed.

I went off it. It wasnt fun. My dr gave me like huge congratulations, he said he didnt often see it. I took a lot of naps to get thru the worst of it. Maybe see your dentist for a mouthguard if it makes you grind your teeth.

Sometimes it helps to go onto Klonopin and then taper off of Klonopin instead since Xanax has such a short half-life. Klonopin (for me, in the past) has been easier to get off of than Xanax.

That is a good point. Klonopin has a very long half life and is a great way to tales off more potent Benzos.

Im scared to go off it. I’m even keeping my Pdoc when I move 3 hours away because he prescribes it with no questions asked. I honestly think he’s a bit careless when it comes to benzos.

I went off it years ago before it was a big deal. Just a two week taper. It was fine, I was fine.

Hmm, I don't think a two week taper would be enough for me but thank you for responding. I have instant withdrawal if I skip or lower a dose.

you might want to switch to Valium or Klonopin and do a liquid taper it may take a year to get off of it but it will be easier on your body

Had some life events come up so it's only now that I'm able to start tapering. Unfortunately my psych will not switch me but that's fine. I heard that an eight week taper is the minimum required? Anyone done it in that time because that's my plan right now, down from 2mg daily.
