I feel like addictions ease pain and stress we are dealing with but in the end makes everything worse. Can’t stop though.

Welcome to MSF @Btay - I am sorry that you feel you cannot stop but that is a common situation with people in habitual actions.
For me it was part body and part mental habit. Going cold turkey did not give my body time to acclimate to withdrawing from nicotine. But I also had to change my modes of thinking about how much happiness or joy I really received from it. I almost got professional help it was so difficult to quit. I was fortunate that by gradually withdrawing from the substance I was able to acclimate the body and my mind to the nicotine free situation. What kept me doing that over and over again was that relief of pain and soothing quality, I had even if only temporarily. By getting that soothing in other ways I eventually took back that part of my life and felt a lot better. Drinking and drugs numbed pain for so long. Until it didn't. Then it caused even more. No one knows what another's rock bottom is. Being sick and tired of being sick and tired is what got me to seek help. My avenue was AA. Everyone is different in their own approach. For me it has thus far worked.
Not the person I was a year ago. Still a work in progress, but progress continues to be made. Addicts can always go pro, and can also retire early. My life is more precious to me now than ever. There's hope if you are ready.
