I have struggled for the past three years with an addiction to pain medication. It has been about six months since I have been clean but I recently came down with inflammation of my gallbladder.

I have had to start taking pain meds to control the pain and I feel all the old urges coming back. It is a constant struggle not to take more than I need and even when I feel I need the medication it is a struggle to know whether to believe myself.

I was wondering if anyone had any advice as to how to conquer a pain med addiction and how do you control your urges when you absolutely have to use for physical reasons?

Does the doctor that prescribed these pain meds know you have addiction problems with them?

No my doctor is not aware of it. I pretend like its no longer an issue. Im afraid they wont take my complaints seriously and think Im just faking to get pain meds. I guess they should be made aware but I just dont have the courage to pluck up and tell them.

ask for the non narcotic pain meds to see if those might help. my husband is on tramadol and it does help him.
