Oh Emily? Please post a list of alcoholic and addiction books to that we can better understand those who face these afflictions.

For those of us not dealing with firsthand addiction we need help to understand those that we love who are stuck in the cycles of drinking and/or drugs.

Grazie.

"Under the Influence: A Guide to the Myths and Realities of Alcoholism" is pretty much a classic - it's by Milan and Ketcham. I haven't come across a list like the one you are describing, but if I do, I'll be sure to post it.

Maybe someone else knows of helpful books?

I'm more of a 'visual' person myself... Because of my concentration problems, I can understand movies a lot better than books. Would you be interested in some movie choices that explain addiction/alcoholism pretty well?

Just thought with the list of diss. books you came across you may have some master list of resources for different disorders/diseases. Actually was kinda hoping Book lists for alcoholism and addiction?

I'll ask BamaSurvivor for the info she offered. I've seen a few recommendations but not quite sure if there are books for 'others' not in addiction/alcoholism to help understand those diseases/disorders.

I'm trying to better understand someone very dear to me and my lack of really 'getting it' is frustrating to me so research time!! Book lists for alcoholism and addiction?

Here's hoping ppl chime in with some offerings or maybe I'll dig around in this forum seeing if links are here and there.......perhaps even consolidating them into one post..........it's late and this is too ambitious for now but sooooon......

by all means please share your movie choices here!

I'm trying to better understand someone very dear to me who has issues relating to alcoholism and addictive personality? not sure if that is still what they call it.

Anyhow I cannot fully grasp what my friend has lived through and I really would like to hear about serious alcoholic parents and the effects on the family AND maybe about those children once grown ACOA right? Adult children of alcoholics?

I appreciate the offer and like the choice of learning in different ways. Movies can be the aha! moment moreso than a paragraph in a book. Good to know that this info is out there in many formats.

Leaving Las Vegas, with Nicholas Cage... It's a very good movie with an amazing story. It shows the feelings of the actual addict, and it shows the feelings and frustrations of the person who loves the addict and wants to help.

There's a few other movies I'd recommend but most are mostly from the drug addicts prospective, but it does give you a good look at why they use, how they use, and what drugs/alcohol can do to them.

Requim (spelling?) For A Dream
Spun
The Basketball Diaries
There's also a documentry if you can find it called Black Tar Heroin. If you can find it, I'd strongly suggest watching it. It's hard for me to watch it now without thinking back to my 'old' days, but it's truely a good documentry on learning how to understand the usage of drugs.
Blow

Those are the ones I can think of off the top of my head at the moment. I hope that is at least a little helpful. Although they don't really go back to parents addictions that leads to their childrens addiction (not all those films anyway), most have some sort of abuse by the parent which has lead them to drugs.

I commend you for caring so much about your friend. That's awesome!
