My Dad was an alcoholic my entire life growing up. Later on when I was a teen..he had built a crappy bar in the basement. He sat there alone, drinking. How could he have not realized he had a drinking problem?? What a bad example. Then later on when I was an adult, I drank alone. I'm sober now for years, tho. I really don't think its a good idea for adults who have a drinking problem, to drink around any kids, present. My Dads personality was hyped up happy while drinking. Sometimes euphoric. I could see his personality change. Both of my parents were mentally ill. A lot of horror for me in that house. He died years ago. When I had to clean up the place, it still felt like a horror show. I couldn't wait until it got sold. We even had to chop up that garbage bar with an all-saw thing..to break it down smaller for the trash dumpster, lol.

Congratulations on being sober! My dad was an alcoholic, too. I don't know if my parents are mentally ill, but it seems like I got bipolar disorder from SOMEwhere. I'm glad you got to chop up the bar with an all-saw thing! Sounds cathartic.

@Moose72 Hello & thanks for your reply. I'm sorry if your Dad's alcoholism affected you, too. It had to have! So much craziness, just from an alcoholic. Not even counting if mental illness was present, also. I was constantly embarrassed by his behavior.

It's good you got to chop down that bar. Every day I know I have 24 hours to stay sober and for over 6 years I have. It seems like a long time, but take it a day at a time.

CONGRATS!! Pretty sure when 2021 hits, I'll begin 4th year of zero alcohol. I was a very serious alcoholic & I drank large amounts. I liked to drink constantly if I had the money to do so. So I guess I was pretty darn addicted. We should talk here about alcoholism! Today I wished I had some. I'm afraid someday I might start again. I am bored lately, is the problem. Have a good day/night!

shovelhead, you are incredible! You've broken the cycle of family alcoholism. To me, breaking a family cycle of addiction and abuse is the most healthy action someone can take.

@BethRags.....Thank u so much for your kind words to me. Yes, later after Dad had died, I found out my grandfather, his dad, was also a severe alcoholic. And they both died young, at 65 from heart issues. Alcohol is bad on the heart. Alcohol is bad news.

Speaking of alcohol being bad on the heart, that makes me think of the fact that a number of years ago my dad had a quintuple bi pass. He's been a big drinker as far as I know all my life and I'm 48. I call him just to hear his voice and then we have nothing to talk about sometimes. I always feel like our conversation is going to be our last. He's 73 now and not in great shape. The alcohol has really done a number on his body.

@Moose72 Hi. Yeah, I read awhile ago about the damage alcohol can cause on heart. I don't remember exactly what it does. I was more interested in reading about damage to brain, for myself. Alcohol wreaks havoc on the human body, period. It affects every single organ while its in person's system. So I guess it really is POISON, like they say.
