Ever since I was institutionalized in the psych ward at 17 then diagnosed as paranoid schizophrenic in 2012 and going back for drug/insurance issue (they get me insurance faster than me waiting and getting violent, which just sends me back there) I've kept getting the same comment from them that I could qualify for antisocial personality disorder. Them being the psych nurses, group therapists, and on one occasion a therapist i had back in 2013. The last time I was told this was in 2018 when I had a bad problem with poppers, which i think is just meth in a bottle that you huff, I had told him what other psychologists have said in the past and he said "I agree with them" to which I asked "do you think I could qualify for antisocial personality disorder?" and he replied "Yes!" then walked away angrily.
What I don't understand, and maybe someone can weigh in on it, is why it that they'll tell me that I could qualify for antisocial personality disorder but not diagnose/recommend me to someone in the city that can take those record from the psych ward and tell me whether I am or not??? |

Dear Transwomen,
That sounds like such a frustrating situation. I have often wondered what doctors and medical professionals are thinking when do certain things or don't do them. Some times it doesn't seem to make any sense to me. I am so sorry you are in a similar type of situation! Sincerely yours, Yao Wen |

Welcome to MSF, Transwomen. I'm sorry I don't think I can answer your question for you. As far as being given a diagnosis of AsPD goes sometimes mental health professionals are reluctant to give someone a formal diagnosis of a mental disorder that is as stigmatizing as AsPD can be. I think this also occurs sometimes with Borderline Personality Disorder.
But as far as why the mental health professionals you've seen won't refer you to someone who can look at your records and tell you yes or no goes, perhaps it's as simple as they don't know of anyone. Or the other possibility is they're just incompetent. I've had some experiences similar to what you describe and I still don't understand what was going on other than that perhaps the so-called mental health professionals I was dealing with were incompetent. (I'm afraid I have a pretty jaded view of the mental health services that are available where I live. Maybe it's like that where you live too?) Obviously I don't know. But, at least from my perspective, I suspect the only person whose going to help you is you... sad to say. I hope you find being here on MSF to be of benefit though. |

Can you get a neuropsych eval? My advice is to not get stuck on why other people do things if it doesn't impede what you can do right now for yourself.
