I worked in retail when I was younger and the managers really liked me. They had one computer at the front end of the store where people could apply for a job. One of the managers was trying to hire her friend's son but he was having a hard time passing the shallow personality assessment in the application process. This manager called me up to the front end of the store to help her friend's son answer questions for the personality assessment. I'm an antisocial person but I know what the correct answers are for a shallow personality assessment.

Other employees were watching us of course and somebody complained to HR. I came into work one morning with a slight hangover and chugged an energy drink. I got called to meet with HR at her office and she wanted to interview me about that situation. I felt quite silly because I just drank an energy drink and I was a little shaky in my mannerisms.

I was obviously asked to do something by a manager but HR basically told me that I need to think more objectively. I don't know why I thought of this today but it makes me think of how we can be so full of ourselves. At the time, I felt like a hotshot aiding in this slightly manipulative endeavor, and I wasn't really thinking about how that could be perceived by others.

We all kept our jobs and the kid got hired.

Thanks for sharing this. From what you wrote, it sounds like you didn't implicate the manager. That was kind. But perhaps it was in your own self-interest? Had you mentioned the manager's involvement perhaps it would have come back to bite you in the butt, as they like to say. Glad to hear everything worked out well in the end.
