I have a fear around eating which is a hard thing to deal with because you need to eat to live. I have a peanut allergy which is newly diagnosed within the past 2 years and i had a severe allergic reaction out of the blue to it and i sort of feel tramatized because everytime im eating it feels like my throat is closeing or it is hard to swallow even with foods that dont contain peanuts. I am just afraid I am going to end up with an eating disorder because of it. Like i am so afraid of having another reaction I wont eat alone and I always have wierd dreams where it has something to do with peanut butter or peanuts in general and then I wake up and feel like I can breathe. Any thoughts or advice?

The good news is, you know about it!

The best thing to do is work with your doctor and a threrapist/psch doc about how best to deal with your fear. Much of the time I get anxious when I worry I won't know what to do if something that triggers me happens. I had an attack of agoraphobia this morning. Once I got into my normal routine, I came up with a plan that even if it is a 10 minute drive, if I have not gone anywhere Saturday or Sunday, I have to take that drive on Sunday. Otherwise, it is hard to leave on Monday morning. Go over a plan with your doctor. If you know what you have to do, it may reduce the anxiety!

Hello softball, it's nice to meet you, welcome to psych central.
Have you talked to a therapist about your fear? It sounds like your allergic reaction was pretty traumatic for you plus having to watch everything you eat must be very difficult for you to deal with. I definitely recommend talking to someone about this, it may really help.

It does sound like your allergic reaction was very traumatic, and I am sorry you had such a reaction. However, peanuts are a very common allergy in people who are allergic to nothing else. You might try keeping a food diary or, if you can afford, get allergy testing which includes food substances. In the meantime, I doubt if you are allergic to most things. Peanuts are allergens for many people, and you are quite possibly allergic to nothing else. However, it would not hurt to read ingrediants on some things, to see if they contain peanut oil. billieJ
