A little over 1.5 months ago I had a very bad experience on marijuana. After that one experience I developed anxiety and now I have depersonalization from it as well (a side effect from anxiety where things feel unreal).
I have spoke with my therapist about it and we can't figure out if I have anxiety over the bad and traumatic experience I had on the drug or if it may have brought out an unlined anxiety disorder. I had just a tad bit of anxiety here and there a bit before, but nothing like it is now. Mental health issues run in my family, but no one has experiences depersonalization like I have or seems to have the terrible effects I am getting from it. I'm 20 if that helps. Anyone got any ideas? |

One of my best friends, a girlfriend from high school (we're 60 now) had a similar experience to yours when we were in college. I think I remember she was in grad school, so about 1974. She said she was smoking marijuana at a party and almost jumped off a balcony. It scared her so bad she hasn't smoked since.
Anxiety feeds on itself. I would think too, that the anxiety and depersonalization would too, especially perhaps at your age. I started therapy in college when I was 20 because of anxiety over changes in my life (growing up, going out in the world, being an adult and having to live my own life/be responsible for myself) and it got a lot worse in my mid-20's before it got better (in my 30's).

No matter which option it is, you have elevated anxiety. Maybe it is time to talk to your psychiatrist?

I want to, but the problem is you have to get referred to one and all these medical doctors are no help and wont refer me when they don't even understand what is going on! I am going to try and see a new doctor soon and maybe she can help or refer to me one. It seems like its been really hard for me to find local help and no ones seems to care or take me seriously.

Don't smoke again.. Seriously.
I thought it was only anxiety it was causing but I kept smoking and ended up having a psychotic episode, kept smoking and had a few more. Now I'm dxed with schizoaffective because now I freak out even without smoking. |

I agree, if you know that this smoking is making your anxiety worse, rather focus your attention and energy onto something positive like controling your thoughts and mindsets, rather than trying to escape them through the use of drugs.
All the best! |

You do not need a referral to see a psychiatrist in Oregon. You can look in the yellow pages and call one. Or you can look for a mental health clinic and go that route. Goof luck to you.

Oh good yeah I wont ever do it again. I was fine for years before just smoking it here and there, but this time I ate it in a cookie that is what did me in. I'll try to look into the doctor thing, but every time I called some where they told me I had to be referred. Its like no one will help me!

Perhaps the marijuana was laced with something else?

there should be a county mental health agency in your town that can refer you to a psychiatrist, if they don't have one of their own. Be proactive and try to find the mental health in your area. That is your best bet right now. Otherwise ask your T to help you find one.

pot can't just ''cause'' a disorder to show up. it may have acted as a trigger if anything. people who can't handle pot just shouldn't smoke it, that's all. and if the pot was laced, you'd know right away.
it's very common to feel that way if you ate a pot cookie. it's a very different high and it will hit you hard because you're digesting it. |

I'm with perpetually sad. My first thought was that it was laced with something quite possibly low levels of lsd into the more concentrated levels of marijuana resin which is usually used in cooking. The cooking also brings out a strong resin from the marijuana and can have a very potent effect.
Coupled with the poisons used to grow the drug hydroponically which have been proven to cause phsycosis when compared to naturally grown marijuana (or bush as it is known), will create a problem that is very difficult to manage. Hope all goes well maybe either look for bush grown or limit usage?
