I'm 19... so why do I have this horrible fear of time and getting older?

I've had this fear since I was 14. Looking at pictures, or watching a movie where time is shown passing in a montage, makes life seem like it is just going by way too fast... I'm ONLY 19? So why does the thought of growing older give me this horrible feeling of dread and nervousness?

The very thought that every second is a moment I cannot get back drives me crazy! I just need life to slow down a bit or something... I can't bear the thought that I will have to die one day. I've never really written or talked about this I don't think, but it scares me a lot.

I'm young and I know I should be enjoying life... so why can't I stop wasting my worries on something so... out of my control?

ya, maybe thats why your worried about it, because it IS out of your control? i no for me, if i dont have control over a situation then i feel uneasy about it. maybe not scared so much, but maybe the thought of you cant control aging is the very thing that is making you scared, maybe not so much the aging process itself....

I think in my case I fear getting older because it means I have more responsibility and I really don't want to be responsible for anything at all. Not that I don't really hate the fact that I have no control over it.

That is very unusual at your age to think of aging/death. Most kids your age feel invincible which leads to risk taking because "it won't happen to me".

You can't change the past or the future, you only can change the immediate moment. Do you have goals? Long term or short term? If so work on balancing working toward your goals with doing something each day that you enjoy, even if only for fifteen minutes.

There are some good things about growing older. I enjoy my son. I enjoy having my own house. I am wiser than I was thirty years ago.

I do have goals and I try to work towards them every day. Sometimes I really wish I had the ignorant invincible feeling of an average person my age...

You can slow this "rapid perception of time" by practicing being in the present moment, after all this is all we have.

Take a moment and look around you, what do you see, what do you hear, what do you feel, what do you smell?

When I feel that time is racing by, I make myself stop and be aware of the present moment. In reality, that is all we have.

Sounds like you are living in the future. What is so scary to you about living in the present moment? Have you thought about why living in the future is so important to you? What is chasing you into the future?
Thanks for this!

Hi BatsAndButterflies...

I'm about the same age as you and have the same constant worry. I feel like I've wasted the best part of my life. I am also afraid of making big life decisions that come with getting older. Just "growing up" in general is a really scary thing, I think.

I agree with June_Bug, that the only real thing we can do is stay in the present moment. It's just a lot harder than it sounds...

Just wanted to let you know that you're not alone! Hang in there.

I just feel like I am wasting time in the present moment. I want to live in the future and be prepared I think. I am scared that I won't acheive what I would like to and if I am constantly prepared I am never surprised or dissapointed. Also, the future hasn't happened yet, so I feel that I can still change it and make the right decisions so I won't regret it later...
