Does anyone else here have Misophonia or suspect that you do?
http://www.misophonia-uk.org/faqs.html I think I have misophonia. I get really frustrated and irritated at the sounds others make, such as chewing (which is the worst), breathing, snoring, gum chewing, gum smacking, paper shuffling, nail picking, and so on. I get so angry with this sometimes, more times than not, that I have to find ways to avoid it, such as covering my ears or listening to music, or else I'll just suffer through the noise. I think this sounds like Misophonia to me. . . what do you all think? I want to see if there's anyone else with Misophonia here, anyone that can understand how this can create extreme rage and anxiety, anyone that can relate. I'm sure I have questions about it, but it's hard to find people to talk to that can relate. So does anyone here have Misophonia or suspect that you do? |

OMG you have no idea how bad I have it. I'm a 40 year old female and dealing with this in a corporate cube farm is next to impossible. I'm actually sitting here right now with earplugs in, a fan running next to my head, and almost in tears because my coworker in the next cube is eating, smacking, and talking non stop. It's horrible and I can't bear to be next to this guy for 8 hours a day. But if I say anything people act like I'm some sort of freak. I'm actually having trouble composing this email because I'm about to have a panic attack. I just spent a few minutes in the bathroom hoping that he would finish whatever he's eating. It's a freaking nightmare and I HATE this so much. I've dealt with it since I was a kid. My dad is also a horrible trigger... his eating and smacking sounds make me want to kill someone. It sucks because it's always a person you like or even love that causes these feelings of rage. Then I feel guilty and stupid afterwards. But seriously, it gets so bad my blood pressure rises, I feel like I'm going to explode, and I wish for the person to choke to death on whatever they are eating. I won't even talk about chewing gum or I will definitely go into a full blown panic. I take Xanax and it doesn't help one bit with this. My 16 year old niece is starting to exhibit symptoms of it now so at least she feels comfortable with me to talk about it. Everyone else in our family thinks we are crazy and "overreacting". There is a Yahoo group for this condition, sometimes called 4S. I frequently post there when I need to vent. Good luck to you. Feel free to vent to me anytime you want! ![]() |

Hello, AniveCsebure! Yes, I suffer from 4S/Misophonia. Here are a couple related threads:
Other Peoples' SoundsI usually employ earplugs, music/noise, and/or flight (fleeing the source) to combat it. Yes, I have experienced "episodes" triggered in part by 4S.

Yes! Omg! I know exactly what you mean! I've flipped out on so many people because I couldn't stand to hear them eat! And they all just think i'm a jerk, but I can't stand it, like it makes me feel like the world is turning upside down and everything is terribly wrong, and the stupid person just won't stop making everything go all crazy! It's like PLEASE just close your mouth! And don't make any mouth noises. It makes me want to either run away or plot ways to make the person choke on whatever they're eating. I keep track of loud eaters among my family and friends and (secretly) carefully plot out seating arangements to avoid loud cheers. I try to eat alone as much as possible and I hate going to movies, because I can hear people eat. The worst part is that people get offended if you ask em to stop eating loudly, so all you can do is quietly sit in agony. I've asked a couple friends to stop eating loudly, and they kinda look at me like i'm a crazy person. And I don't want people to think of me as some crazy psycho b****.

Oh yes, I have this too. People eating, dogs barking, the sound of people rubbing their hands together or rubbing feet on the carpet makes me cringe. Highly highly sensitive to all of it and it puts me on edge instantly. That said, I can't stand dead quiet either. I need my white noise (fans, etc). There are even some websites that offer white noise.

I know this is an old post but I am the same way!!!! My worst is chewing even with their mouth closed and hearing the spit sloshing around..... UGH!!! I have been this way as long as I can remember I had no idea there was a name for it. I yell at them and have to get away, I cannot stand that noise!

Agreed, I know this is an older post but I have misophonia too - but my daughter has it extremely bad. I tend to have problems with mechanical sounds...clicking keyboards, fans, clocks, etc. My daughter has "people" issues..chewing, hiccups, nail picking - the list is endless. We just recently discovered what it was - for years, I kept telling her she was just going to have to deal with it
