Hi all anxiety and depression have been part of my life for so long I can't remember life before it..... The anxiety has been giving be really intense physical symptoms for a while now, in fact I had a mini stroke in January.
I have a psych nurse who comes to my home and zfyer a long discussion she suggested we should introduce a medication that would calm me and hopefully reduce these symptoms, also that because my antidepressants don't help me after taking them for 12 years we could perhaps look into trying a different medication.
Great I thought someone who listens who can see a change needs to be made, especially where the anxiety was concerned.
Well yesterday I got a call from her and she told me my visits would be more regular to monitor me also that my psych has refused point blank to change or introduce any other medications!!!!
I know there are side effects but why keep me on meds that don't work?
Honestly he's such a prat his attitude is terrible and he has so many formal complaints made against him for these reasons.
I know he's the professional but c'mon I can't deal with this anxiety giving me heart pain where upon I need to take my spray ( years ago I only got chest pain from anxiety).
One example of his attitude was during an appointment I began to cry , he replied 'crying will get you no where with me madam' I mean CMON your not my father and I'm talking some real intense issues and emotions over here, my partner couldn't believe it.
He gets me so frustrated but there's very few psychs here.
Anyone else been through this?
Rant over ......sorry guys
Take care
J

Psychs can be frustrating: I've been through 3 this past year. The first one was a jerk and told me "there's nothing we can do" and put me on Ativan (an addictive benzo). The second one was much more compassionate, but kept me on Ativan and put me on an antidepressant and seroquil. I continued to see him for almost the entire year until I met the third one who took me off all the meds.

If you have the option of exploring another psych I would recommend doing so. There are actually websites online where people rate their psychs, you can use those to find one that you may want to work with and then ask for a referral or just change, however it works where you are from.

I've never been happier with the Psychiatrist I am with now, he listens and has my well-being in mind. Had I stayed with the first Psychiatrist, I don't know if I'd be here writing this today.
Thanks for this!

Hi thanks for the reply, unfortunately I can't change as there's a shortage here on the NHS in my area, I'm so pleased I have the psych nurse visiting as she is great.
Obviously she isn't as qualified as my psyh however she talks a lot more sense and realises my individual needs, and realises if something's not working after 12 years then its time to change.
I don't know honestly I think some of the older psychs need to open up to new ways and findings of diagnosis and treatments.

Take care thank you

Your Pdoc really does sound like a prize prat, what a pathetic comment about your tears

I understand the limitations of the NHS, but would it be at all possible for you to look into switching to another Pdoc, but keeping your nurse? Could you speak to her about it? I know it's a pain having to fight the system, but if you're getting rubbish treatment and for that long too, you may well have a strong enough case to get better care.

Otherwise, you have all my sympathy, and having to make the best of a bad situation

Afterthought, could you not speak to your GP about switching ADs? They are licensed to prescribe psychiatric meds too, and that may be a way of putting a case for switching your meds?
