Even though I'm technically doing the work for class, I think I'm disappointing my teacher because I'm not putting in what he considers extra effort. I think he believes that I'm just coasting by on my work and that I'm not taking his class seriously.

I'll sum up: I'm sticking with easy, familiar topics so I'll be able to do a better job on the assignments, and I'm avoiding an interview assignment (which is not required but strongly recommended. As in, if you don't do an interview, good luck getting any letter of recommendation or good references.)

My teacher wants us to challenge ourselves. I just want to do a good job on my work and not waste anyone else's time with my incompetence.

When I was a kid the highest grade you could get is an A (no pluses or anything) and there was a number grade showing effort from 1-4 with 1 being the best effort. I had a lot of A4's, I was capable of the work but I put no effort in and it was apparent to my teachers.

Even when I went to university I resisted putting effort in, things had come so easy through elementary and high school... I am a little worried for my son, that he will not develop study skills as he is a genius (his IQ is in the 99.9 percentile, I didn't even know that was possible).

My H was like that.....he didn't want to put any extra effort into a class & he didn't want to learn anything extra from any extra work he could have done.....while I wanted to get the maximum amount of education out of every class I took (I met him in the University).

He didn't want to waste his time on things that didn't interest him....graduated with a 2.? GPA.......thought he should be handed a programming position at the bank where he was working during college.....they didn't want him because he didn't have the minimum 3.0 GPA they required of graduates to qualify for any position at the bank......what he never got was that companies didn't want someone who would only put effort into things that interested them.....they want someone who would do the job no matter how interested they were in the assignment they were given.....that's what they pay them for.

Needless to say....his attitude got him absolutely NOWHERE in having a successful career of life.

I worked my tail off & put 200% into every class (& everything I do in life). I graduated from the same university......with only a 3.25 GPA (struggled with calculus & statistics)...but I had several job offers before I ever graduated to choose from.....I worked hard no matter what I was given to do at work.......his choice to life the way he choose.....but he was always complaining on how bad the university was & that was why he did so poorly.....when in reality....it was his choice in how he was willing to deal with the classes he took.

The thing is....there are consequences to the choices we make & sometimes we don't experience them until way after & then we end up regretting those choices....unfortunately in his case, he was never willing to regret....all he would ever do was blame everyone else for his problems.

The bottom line is that the only one that is hurt by not putting in the maximum effort is yourself....& the limitations we place on ourselves, & experiences for growth that one can get by putting the maximum effort into the classes & for that fact, any opportunities that come our way during life.

I have a similar problem at the moment... Besides the heavy issues with disciplinary issues throughout school... Anyways, I spent my entire senior year doing almost nothing except watching Futurama, South Park, and Family Guy and managed to graduate with a 4.38 with mostly advanced classes,
I have never put effort into education. I am now in college. I am unable to cope with the amount of work and expectations that I now have.
