I am starting a new job as a cleaner in a mall tomorrow. I'm getting nervous and I think the thing that makes me the most anxious is that I wear a uniform and the shirt needs to be tucked in. I am about 215 pounds, I am very self conscious and generally try to hide my hips/belly/butt area, but after trying on the uniform, I feel anxious when thinking about having to wear it in a busy mall where there's tons of people

take solace in the fact that in a busy mall with tons of people, nobody really pays attention to anybody else. they are there on a mission to shop. i have never once noticed a cleaning person, didn't even know they had them. so try not to be self conscious. it is not like you have to engage with anyone. just focus on your job and be good at it. take care.

That's what I keep trying to remind myself. I worked in the food court in a fast food restaurant for awhile and that's probably the only reason I regular would see the cleaners, and I know a lot of them that I'd see on a daily basis and not once did I ever notice anything about their uniforms so if they were maybe self conscious about it, I never noticed anything unusual, so I keep telling myself that.

Congratulations on the new job, JustWantToBeNormal (Can I call you JW for short? ). I think most people are caught up in their own worries to think about anyone else. Just do your best. Have a good first day.

Thanks I've been without a job for 4 months, because I was put off my last one due to stress and anxiety since my boss was a bully and yelled at me all the time.
So it wasn't too bad, although I don't remember ever being this sore after a day of work :/ hard time walking, took a long soak in the tub and it helped a little, my feet were hurting so bad. The job is a lot more active than I thought, LOTS of walking, bending and picking things up. Hoping I feel better for my shift tomorrow. Oh, and I never thought I'd clean toilets for minimum wage lol. There's 7 women's washrooms in the mall, and we have to clean all 7, 3x in the course of a shift. 'Oh, and I never thought I'd clean toilets for minimum wage lol.'
That don't matter, the important thing is you have a job. Anyway I'm doing the same at the moment! |

Congrats on the new job! Those of us that use restrooms anywhere appreciate your services.
As far as being self conscious about your weight, just remember, that does not define you anymore than my thinning hair defines me. I'm carrying around some extra pounds but when I really look around, I am in good company. We are what we are and we beam from the inside out! Being on your feet is very hard. I find that taking 2 Aleve pretty much erases my physical discomforts. When I'm headed out for a full day of shopping, I pre-medicate with 2 Aleve with breakfast. Works wonders. Again, congrats. |
