I see that being among people might be a trigger for some people with social anxiety, but some have no problem with it. In my case, being asked a directed question about 'why' I did this or that is like torture. I wonder whether I should try to get exposure to people asking me 'why whatever' would help me deal with the problem. What common treatments are there? (besides psycho-drugs).

why is generally a difficult question to answer for anybody. it is a hard question to answer. it puts people on the spot. better questions are how or what. so don't stress so much about about not being able to answer why.

Gradual exposure is the way to go. Don't jump into the water, but get a planned exposure to it, step by step. Dealing with phobias (including social phobia) is like training a muscle, really. Too much can harm you, but you can train it.
