Am I the only one who's been freaking out over this and hoping deeply that it fails because I don't want everyone around me with a camera on their face? Like, the concept makes me deeply paranoid and just the thought makes me afraid I'd never want to go outside.

(I'm guessing will go the way of the Segway, it serves no new purpose to consumers and is just a neat add-on and the WOW factor will wear off quick, too many people have responded negatively, even at Google HQ itself, but I'm still really worried because it's still a thing, with an intent to be released.)

Google Glass - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Here is a link that tells you about it. I couldn't really tell you in my own words because I didn't know much about it so I googled it. (no pun intended)

It does terrify me too, now that I think about it.

Yeah, it's pretty much a minimalist headset device (as shown on the wiki page, I think it looks tacky), that is like a smartphone on your face where you see everything on this little screen in front of one of your eyes. It uses a camera, on the front for certain things. Or, like a camera phone, a person can just use the camera. Supposedly others should notice because "a light will go on", but it seems like people will figure out quickly how to disable that who want to.

For me personally, even though I've come to think it'll fail (because of articles like this: 7 reasons why Google Glass will fail | Techi.com becoming more common and prevalent, even from high up people that used to praise it, though my paranoia and anxiety was far worse when everyone was singing the praises of the stupid product) - I'm still paranoid and anxious.

It makes me want a time machine. I want to go back to before all this. Or to have a magic wand to alter history in such a way that we didn't end up in a world where there's a camera everywhere. I don't care if it's a government or a private person holding it, it makes me super uncomfortable and gives me anxiety.

I get anxiety attacks when people hold up their phones and construct a whole paranoid narrative of are they taking a picture of me? If Google Glass were to take off, it'll set me back a ton. I'll just refuse to go in public.

I hate this crap. It's useless, junk technology because everyone has to get in everyone's face with their nifty new gizmos. And for the mentally disabled, who have severe anxiety or paranoia, what kind of protections do we get? I don't know if there could be an answer, but a second thought would be nice.

No, you're not the only one. I feel this way, exactly this way. It really freaks me out.

I do this, too. I'm having a hard time controlling my anxiety when I get stuck in a situation like this. I know I'm basically nobody, I'm not a celebrity or anything, but I just can't control that feeling of Why are you taking my picture? Are you going to put it on Facebook? Are you making a YouTube video of lame people you see when you're out and about?

Well, at least we can take solace in knowing each other exist and we're not alone in experiencing that. I'm new here, so it's actually very strange for me to see someone feel the same way about that. We gotta stick together!

Things like this make me upset that while there's accommodations (not nearly enough, certainly) for the physically disabled (as there should be), there's like none for mentally. It drives me wild that you hear about anxiety disorders, you hear about Google Glass, yet I haven't heard a single thing on behalf of those with panic disorder or any anxiety disorder regarding how life would be harder were Google Glass to succeed. Not one article. How has this not been written about, covered, thought about by people who write articles relating to topics like these? I dunno. Bugs me.

EDIT: I hope this doesn't come off as offensive to the handicapped, I don't mean it like "oh they have it, pssht". I get really frustrated when I hear how crappy people treat the physically disabled and ableism toward the physically disabled is frustrating as heck even though I'm physically able-bodied, it was just a comment more on how society is "if it's invisible it isn't real" and therefore nothing is done, like at all.

It was really strange for me, too! I always figured it was just my anxiety making me overreact.

The fact that this was on The Daily Show, and got the laughs it did, is a good indicator against its viability. Some grand product bound to succeed wouldn't be so easy to just trample, on a satire show like this. I'm really hoping this is the next Segway. I wouldn't mind if Google Glass' only pinnacle of success was Gob from Arrested Development getting a pair for whenever they make another season.

I agree too with what you said about tech/smartphones - studies show that humans over the past generation have less empathy, and less people they consider "friends" as defined as "people they can confide in". I believe this is because the more "connected" we become, the more - in reality - we're boxing ourselves off in our rooms and homes. Less and less people enjoy the reality around them, more and more it's replaced with a false reality. We stay in and look at screens. We never need to meet up and see how things are with friends, nor are excited to see them after a month or two or more, because we see their status updates all the time. It reduces human social interaction to text, to zeros and ones, to a bland emptiness.

People get very defensive of this, if you call this out they like to say "luddite!" when in reality it isn't so much an indictment of technology (it's not bashing medical technology, or low orbit telescope technology, or solar panel technology), it's a criticism of social technology. This is important - technology isn't neutral. It appears in society, and creates outcomes - and sometimes, those outcomes are negative, and we need to stop treating the advancement of technology as a constant positive.

Any chance you've read "Alone Together"? Has a great chapter or two on why smartphones are terrible.
Thanks for this!

Sherry Turkle

I gave it a 3 out of 5 if you're wondering. Didn't agree with some of the other things she said in the books but a good read none the less.
