I am getting surgery this Tuesday and I am panicking. Its nothing major, just getting some teeth removed, but I am still worried. Its weird because I don't even know what exactly I am worried about, just nervous I guess.

It's normal to be nervous about these things. I've been there. Have you been under anesthesia before? If not (or if it's been awhile), you might check out the "Panic attacks waking up after anesthesia?" thread in this forum. If you generally suffer from anxiety, it's a good idea to let your dentist and whomever will be with you afterward know, so that if you do have an anxiety attack reaction to the anesthesia, they won't be surprised. It's absolutely normal, and should be treated as a side effect of anesthesia. I'm not saying it absolutely will cause one, it's just a possibility that should be taken into consideration by the medical staff.
Go easy on yourself. Most people get anxious about dental procedures, especially when GA is involved. Let us know how it goes! |

I think you'll be just fine. I had wisdom teeth extracted and was "put under". In the office, it's not like a general anesthesia, where you're totally not there and need a ventilator to help you breath.
It's an IV only. It's sedation that has an amnesiac effect along with the pain relief. You will be there one moment and be done the next...nothing in between. Also you may forget the entire rest of the day, but you will be functioning. It's kind of nice because you'll be real chill... Most importantly, the days previous is the most nerve-wracking part of the whole thing. I really wish I didn't know anything until an hour before. |

My experience was the same as sophiesmom. And, yes, you have nothing to fear or panic about.
I had to have all four wisdom teeth extracted at the same time (and a 10 day wait to agonize over it). The surgery day came and in the office, they hooked an IV up to me. When the IV started flowing, I went to "sleep" without even realizing that it was happening. Next thing I knew, I was waking up. It really did seem like only an instant had passed even though the surgery took over an hour (I asked). After I was awake, I felt absolutely no pain and I never felt any pain while healing. In all honesty, the most "pain" I felt was the IV needle being inserted. I didn't have any effects later on that day except for a strong urge to take a nap in the afternoon. After my nap, I felt good to go. I had virtually no bleeding at any time. I was amazed. All those sterile gauze pads I had bought for packing into my mouth went unused. ![]() Follow the instructions you get for the healing process. One thing I was told which I had never heard of before was not to drink anything through a straw because the force of the suction could cause the healing gums to open up a bit and therefore delay the healing process. I can't say that it was an "enjoyable" experience, but I sure had an awful lot of worrying and agonizing over literally nothing. Dental technology and techniques have come a long way over the years. |

I can understand your concern, but you'll be okay.

Suction from straws or smoking = dry socket. Way more painful than any abscessed tooth I ever had.
I've always been terrified of "the dentist" and now go to a Gentle Dentistry practice. The environment is serene and the staff all know how to help the patient deal with anxiety. And the "sedation" is pretty good, considering there is no IV involved. Make sure you talk about your fears with your provider. They can and will explain and answer questions and give reassurance. Good luck! |
