I just saw a psychiatrist and indicated long ago I had taken Prozac and Xanax for depression and anxiety.

The Doctor prescribed Prozac for depression, but would not prescribe Xanax or anything similar because of the addictive qualities.

I have read that Neurontin is FDA approved as an analgesic (nerve pain disorders) and an anticonvulsive (seizures). The drug apparently is prescribed for a whole host of other reasons not approved, and not supported by clinical trials.

I am very leery about taking a drug that doesn't have a firmly established relationship to the medical problem it is suppose to treat.

What can you tell me about this drug and its appropriateness for use to treat anxiety/panic attacks?

I have been prescribed a very low dosage of the drug and question whether I will even fill it.

It doesn't really help me for panic. I take it because for nerve pain from Klonopin withdrawal and because I can't deal with another discontinuation syndrome.
Thanks for this!

I spoke with my therapist today who was in total agreement with me that the medicine prescribed was inappropriate due to the lack of any evidence to support that the drug is effective for anxiety and or panic attacks.

Due to my insurance situation, I now have to wait 2 months to see another doctor to get medication for both depression and anxiety. I could very well be dead before I get what I need.

Needless to say I am very angry. What the Doctor did with an off label prescription is not illegal, but it does not hold to the standard of do no harm.
Thanks for this!

They're grasping at straws because there's so much trouble prescribing benzos. It's awful for us. I'm sorry you're going through this.
