hello all,
I was on xanax 1 mg 3x daily for ten years. About one year ago I made a decision to terminate meds..Quite frankly I was disgusted by wight gain, lethargy and diminished/ non existent libido..I had many reasons to think about detox, loss of health insurance was the determining factor...detox was done proper, nice n slow..some wight came off,not much. Libido improved quite well and lethargy is a thing of the past...now i haven't left the house in 2 months, seriously have not stepped outside. The old thoughts of run far and fast are with me 12 hours a day..the other 12 i spend trying to catch my breath or get gut settled down..oh yes, I mustn't forget the wanting to jump outta my own skin...lovely days for certain..i am smart enough to merely stay home..i am a big strong person who when FEELS threatened will violently strike out.i am not a mean man, fear or percieved fear will make the most timid of us act badly..good news is i will have the means to resume treatment shortly..in hind sight, the side effects are far more acceptable than feeling alien. I do wish to return to a bit of normalcy, whatever that is.I am in a very tedious spot. I must believe knowing that is a partial win...treading water for now beats sinking!

Mountainman49, Have you discussed the side-effects of Xanax with your doctor? Some anti-depressants are also beneficial for anxiety. I take Ativan or Valium only as needed. Knowing I have the meds, often reduces the anxiety enough that I don't actually have to take them. It is reassuring to know that I have a safety net if needed.

Bluekoi, When I was seeing a doctor yes I did talk freely of sides...comment was your doing ok , deal with it..I would only consider xanax again on a prn basis...you are absolutely correct, just having meds is a bit of a relief..I must consider situational anxiety , as we temporarily inherited 3 grandkids..It's proven to be overwhelming for me...really have fingers crossed NOT to be medicated..at this point side effects are far preferable ..thanx
