I have a serious phobia of birds.
Not like a normal average fear, like I'm afraid of cats but it's more a dislike than a fear, like I can still sit in a room with a cat as long as it doesn't come near me. But birds.. I can't even go to train or bus stations where I'm from as they sit inside them. I recently went to disneyland paris with my family and found it really difficult to go into some shops and restaurants as birds flew in and out and there was no real effort by staff to get them out. I get so uncomfortable and panicked that I have balled crying in hysterics, in public, alone, on several occasions. Obviously it's not something I can avoid on a daily basis as they are everywhere but honestly I can't even breathe if one flies near me and I have no idea where this fear came from. They just scare the life out of me. |

Hi httpshay
Welcome to PC! I see this is your first post. Come on over to the New Introductions Forum and say hello where others will want to greet you as well. It is not mandatory but we would love to give you a few pointers. New Member Introductions - Forums at Psych Central I am sorry that you have this fear. I have had birds as pets so I don't share this with you but I do understand that a fear is a fear. Just a silly question but did you happen to see any Alfred Hitchcock movies? (USA) One of them was called The Birds. You would remember this movie if you saw it. I can't imagine how this fear started for you. Maybe a childhood experience. I am sorry to hear how frightened it makes you. |

I'm sorry to read you are struggling with this, httpshay. My only real phobias, I guess involve being out in public places such as shopping malls, stores, etc. & public speaking (which I no longer have any reason to do, thankfully.) My wife does know a person, however, who is phobic about birds. Perhaps there is some therapy that could help you to gradually overcome this fear?
