I also suffer from terrible insomnia. I have a terrible time falling asleep. The only thing that has helped me is winding down earlier, such as very shortly after dinner. I make sure I have completed everything. I have OCD so I check everything such as doors etc several times. I then start to read a book and have sleepy time tea an hour before bed.

I started having insomnia 8 years ago. I'm willing to try almost anything except mood-altering chemicals. Watch what you eat, regular exercise, meditation, therapy, herbal teas, etc. Check out You Tube for guided meditations if you're a novice.
