I have noticed that some people have more than one mental illness.
I thought that it was Unlikely to develop bipolar or schzophenia if you have anxiety. How is it possible to have more than one mental illness? |

This is a good question Pink3032,
I have an anxiety disorder plus two other disorders. These have all been diagnosed by my psychiatrist. For me, it's been a case of my diagnosis meeting the criteria in the DSM in order for the diagnosis to occur, so I infact carry 3x diagnosis, all of which have different characteristics. It's not uncommon for one to be diagnosed with more than one thing. |

Hi Pink, Anxiety or GAD a lot of times run with or is a side symptom of many other things.
Example I have GAD, panic Disorder with led to developing Agoraphobia.. Add a nice big dose of recurring depression to this. It comes and goes as well I have come a long way but still have moments . |

... And sometimes one thing feeds on another. People like me who experience chronic pain can also be depressed, or anxious, be traumatized or or or ... getting to the root of the problem is why some people have multiple DX that they identify with and are being treated for.
Plus there is also that pesky ICD code that the docs need to bill insurance. It's gotta fit or they don't get paid.

Most us have some of the symptoms of multiple "diagnoses", but probably not the full-blown "disorder". I, for one, think we spend waaay too much time and energy on labeling ourselves and others, not sure why this makes us so comfortable.
